Bates College

Bates College in Lewiston, Maine was founded in 1855. It is small, highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of 1,700 students. Notable graduates include Secretary of State Edmund Muskie and television host, Bryant Gumbel.

Bates is known as the "hippy" school of the Maine "Little Ivies." Funk bands and environmentalists are common on campus. There is, however, a strong libertarian minority at Bates which publishes the "John Galt Press."
